Allotments have been in existence for hundreds of years, with evidence pointing as far back as Anglo-Saxon times. But the system recognised today dates from the Eighteenth/Nineteenth Century, when land was given over to the labouring poor for the provision of food growing.
An allotment is an area of land, leased either from a private or local authority landlord. A 10 pole allotment was deemed sufficient to produce enough to feed a family of four for a year and 12-15 allotments could be fitted into one acre of land.
A pole rod or perch is a measurement of five and a half yards and originates from the pole or rod used to control a team of oxen when ploughing. These official measurements were dropped in 1965 in preparation for metrication but still remain in common use when referring to allotments. A 10pole allotment would therefore be 55yds. long x 5.5yds. wide. The 10pole allotment is still a common size in rural areas, however in urban areas where land is more of a premium, 5pole or even less are frequently found.
Individual pieces measure 45mm x 28mm, 8 pieces will represent a 10pole allotment; 4 pieces a 5pole allotment.
The sets are supplied un-painted which allows the modeller to customise the crops on their allotment and can be arranged in many different configurations to ensure numerous variations of your allotments.
